Carl painted on the background mountain range in this session. He also put some of the snowy hillside in the middle of the horizon - at least the undercoating of white with a little bit of detail and shadow. You can see the snow in the shadowed area of the background range now too.

Carl has begun experimenting with the shadows and light on the mountains. The sun in the reference shot is shining its light from the left side of the image. The contrasts are such that the values between shadowed areas and directly lit areas are noticeable - but not overly dramatic. There's a fine balance Carl says he'll try to achieve.

Tonight Carl was anxious to scrub in the tree area, and the rocks along the lower right side of the painting - but he ran out of time before he could get to it.

When Carl started this project he had thoughts, at least for the first few sessions, that this would be a fast, loose, painting that would be accomplished with less painting sessions than some of his past works. Tonight, however, he commented that this one will probably take every bit of 40 hours as he develops the detail and gets the light to work the way he wants it to. He's still excited about this painting though because he's really having a lot of fun with the oil paints and their texture and values.
