"Alice Lake", Oil Painting During the time he had to paint tonight Carl worked on the left side of the hillside that runs across the horizon in the painting. Unlike his last session, Carl did not scrape off what he did tonight. However he was grumbling a little bit about not being able to see the kind of detail he was hoping for... yet. He said he plans to spend another session on the hillside details, adding a lot more trees and some rocks trying to get the shadowed area to look more natural so it won't pull attention away from the rest of the painting. One of the last things Carl did tonight was paint in a couple of the background mountain tops. This encouraged him as he could begin to see the contrasting values of light - or at least the potential - between the mountain tops and the shadowed hillside. Carl is enjoying this project a lot. The past few painting sessions have found the clock nearing midnight before he's looked up to see it's time to quit for the night. He made an interesting comment this evening: "Oil paint is more primitive - and relaxing - carrying me back to memories of finger painting." An original 18" X 24" oil painting on stretched canvas using Winsor and Newton Artisan Water Mixable Oils. This project based on a photograph Carl's brother's brother-in-law Lee Eichelberger took while backpacking in Idaho.
