"Alice Lake", Oil Painting If you have worked through some of Carl's other projects in the Easel Cam you know it is common for him to hit a spot in the project where he "paints in circles" for a while. After painting for a few hours this evening Carl didn't like how the hill he was painting was developing, so he used a painting knife and scraped off the oil paint to leave the hill for another session. Actually Carl "erased" the area more than once. He tried to create the shadowed snowy hill using a knife creating a textured surface. But each time the result was "too abstract" and Carl wasn't satisfied. He said he'll probably try to make the area work by painting the hillside with a 3 or 4 color pallete during the next evening he paints. The interesting thing tonight was that Carl found the session completely relaxing - in fact he didn't realize how late it had gotten until it was almost midnight! When Carl first started painting he would get frustrated and antsy when he found himself painting in circles. Now he embraces the "circle sessions" as a challenge, or mystery, to unravel as he translates the image he recalls into the image on the canvas. We'll have to watch and see how many sessions it takes to start moving forward again on this lake scene. An original 18" X 24" oil painting on stretched canvas using Winsor and Newton Artisan Water Mixable Oils. This project based on a photograph Carl's brother's brother-in-law Lee Eichelberger took while backpacking in Idaho.
