"Pelicans' Kitchen"
14" X 18" Canvas, Acrylic Painting

This is Carl's November project. It is hard to see the very light pencil sketch on the white canvas, but this is a shot of how the painting began (below is a photo with the contrast exaggerated that shows some of the sketch more clearly). Carl has decided to do a rather whimsical painting using as a reference photograph a shot he took, quite by chance, last summer while vacationing in Northern Minnesota. What is perhaps offbeat about this painting is that is from inside a fish cleaning shack looking out at Pelican Lake. This was one of those days when the sun was shining bright in spots and clouds were throwing shadows in others. Carl laughed when he thought about what to name this project. At the end of each day the dock boys collect up the remains of the day's catch out of this shack and boat it across the bay to give the pelicans a grand feast. There are rock outcroppings that create little islands in the bay. One of them serves as the dinner plate for probably 50 or so pelicans. Carl thought it was fitting to name this painting "the Pelicans' Kitchen".

This project is another original painting inspired by a vacation photograph
taken on Pelican Lake, Orr, MN, while Carl was staying
at the Aspen Resort during the Summer of 2003.
