"Nocturnal Awakening" 18" X 24" Canvas, Acrylic Painting
This is a progression of photographs taken at
intervals of about 2 hours as this painting of a Minnesota Sunset developed. This
educational series lets you see and read about Carl's experimentations and creation
of this acrylic painting on stretched canvas. Use the
navigational button in the upper right corner to jump from one shot to the next. This was his
art project for September and October 2003. Carl wanted a break from the
meticulous detail painting like in his last painting of a Cougar - so he decided
to do a "simple" painting of this dark Minnesota sunset from a photo he took
while on vacation this past summer. After a couple of sessions studying and
playing with the layout and color scheme, however, Carl saw that,
while this painting requires much less meticulous detail, it will require an
extreme amount of color experimentation and blending to achieve the statement
this painting will make. In this opening photograph you can see a simple
charcoal sketch on the canvas of some of the value regions. You can also see the
reference photo Carl is using to create the painting.
This project is an original painting inspired
by a vacation photograph taken on Pelican Lake, Orr, MN, while Carl was
staying at the Aspen Resort during the Summer of 2003.
