"Alice Lake", Oil Painting For a couple of hours Carl played with the large pine tree tonight, trying to find some definition of the color values that will set up the detail to bring the tree toward reality. The large pine tree is the single most challenging element in this project. Another interesting thing visible in tonight's image has to do with lighting. Carl tried varying his working light during this session by placing a full spectrum light to the upper right of the canvas. This lighting is exactly opposite the natural lighting in the reference image, where the light comes from the upper left of the canvas. Although it gave Carl a unique perspective from which to evaluate some problems with color values, Carl will probably place the project light in its natural location for future painting sessions. An original 18" X 24" oil painting on stretched canvas using Winsor and Newton Artisan Water Mixable Oils. This project based on a photograph Carl's brother's brother-in-law Lee Eichelberger took while backpacking in Idaho.
